EuroGames
Once a year the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation - EGLSF celebrates an huge European gay sport event: EuroGames, the European Gay & Lesbian Multi-Sports Championships. These Games started in Den Haag (the Netherlands) in 1992. EuroGames 2004 in Munich (Germany) attracted about 5.300 participants.
Besides offering a high-quality sport event to the gay/lesbian sports community, the EGLSF wishes to promote the following goals:
- fight against discrimination in sport on grounds of sexual preference
- stimulate integration in sport and emancipation of lesbians and gays
- enable and support the coming out of gay and lesbian sports men and women
- support the founding of new gay/lesbian/straight and mixed groups
No discrimination
The EuroGames are open to everyone who wishes to participate, regardless of gender, age, race, sexual preference etc. This, while keeping in mind, the feasibility of organizing sports for certain groups and the organizational capacity of the host (organizing committee).
Participants
In the past EuroGames, participants from all parts of Europe, and even outside Europe, joined to take part into this unique event. However, to ensure that as many Europeans as possible can take part in this event, participants from outside Europe are put on a waiting list until registration has closed. These people can join the competitions that are not yet full.
Who
Every year, the EGLSF calls for candidates to host the EuroGames 2 years later (because of sufficient time to organize the event). A candidate should be member of the European Federation for some time and have experience with organizing of sport events. At the Annual General Assembly (March 2005), the decision will be taken which candidate will be the host to the EuroGames 2007.
EGLSF - European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation
The European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation was founded in 1989. Its aims are:
- fight against discrimination in sport on grounds of sexual preference
- stimulate integration in sport and emancipation of lesbians and gays
- enable and support the coming out of gay and lesbian sports men and women
- exchange information and enable co-ordination between European sport groups and tournaments
- support the founding of new gay/ lesbian/ bisexual/ straight/ transgender and mixed sport groups
We are a federation which is open to gay, lesbian, straight and mixed sport groups and organizations. At the moment this network has more than 10,000 members within over 100 organizations and sport groups. In the EGLSF all member organizations are autonomous: the Federation is operating as a servicing and co-ordinating body.
The European Federation is the license holder of the EuroGames and a lively network of sport clubs. As a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) we are also actively fighting against discrimination within the European institutions like the Council of Europe and the European Union. We put discrimination of GLBT people on the agenda of European and national sport. One of our projects is to work as a core partner of FARE (Football Against Racism Europe). EuroGames is a very important tool to reach out to regular sport and the Utrecht organization of course plays a key role in 2005.
